Macadam system pavements were originated in the late 1800’s improving upon techniques developed by the Romans. John Loudon Macadam pioneered a technique of mixing appropriately sized crushed stone with hot liquid asphalt to form a permanent pavement. This was due to the fact that in the beginning, modern day asphalt plants simply hadn’t been discovered yet.
